When Getting a “B” is the Best Thing
In this world where everyone is jumping on the green bandwagon, it’s hard for consumers, media and your business contacts to know who’s really doing the right thing, and who has merely slathered their front door, logo and latest product with a bunch of green goo, certain to wash off with the first light rain. Businesses that are really trying to make a difference in their communities and throughout their business relationships have a way to prove it to the world: The B Corporation.
Since 2006, the total number of B Corporations in the US has grown to more than 180, representing 31 industries. Businesses that want to earn their certification must first complete the B Survey, a dynamic online assessment tool that measures social and environmental performance. Although the particular questions differ according to the size and type of company, all versions of the survey assess a company’s governance, environmental impact, community outreach, and employee treatment. The survey takes about 60 to 90 minutes to complete. The CEO typically completes the report with assistance from other departments.
