Here Comes Global Climate Week!
Next week has been dubbed Global Climate Week, to coincide with the annual opening of the UN General Assembly session. Lots of activities planned to draw attention to climate change and it’s affect on global business and environmental issues, beginning September 21st.
The Carbon Disclosure Project has been coordinating annual surveys of corporate carbon reduction targets for the past few years, and is giving sneak peeks of the new statistics going into its official launch next week. The big takeaway from this year’s report is that it appears more corporate managers on on board with the necessity of carbon footprint mitigation than ever before, with 52% reporting a decisive strategy. The targeted reductions have grown more aggressive too, indicating a real push for change instead of the usual lip service. All this is very encouraging, but will it be enough?
Hopefully these thought leaders, as well as the upcoming cap and trade program that should be signed into law any day now, will pull the laggards into the fold so US business as a whole can truly begin doing its part to curb carbon emissions. Only immediate action now will give us a shot of getting on the path to damage control and, dare I say, perhaps environmental recovery.
